Enclosed Telescope
There is a version of this article for the Base Game, see Telescope.
Assigned Duplicants must possess the Astronomy skill.
Red: Disable
The telescope and rocketry system has been entirely reworked in the Spaced Out DLC. The Enclosed Telescope is a building that correspond to the Telescope in the base game. They share the same appearance.
Both the Enclosed Telescope and the Telescope in Spaced Out! can be used to scan the Starmap. However, the smaller, new, Spaced Out Telescope has a range of 3 hexes, while the Enclosed telescope has a maximum range of 4 hexes, and requires additional research to access.
With some careful design, the Enclosed Telescope can be used inside rockets, just like the smaller Telescope building, and functions as expected, provided that it is up against a wall inside the capsule.
Mechanism
Like the Telescope in SO, the Enclosed Telescope can be functional without entirely exposed to space. Instead it uses following mechanism:
- Center on the left-bottom corner tile, 6 tiles to the left and right (13 tiles in total) are used to determine if the telescope is exposed to space.
- If one of them are exposed (as described below), the Telescope is considered exposed, and able to function.
- For each tile described above, it checks the tiles that are more than 3 tiles above it (that is, starting from the fifth tile of the telescope). If there are no solid blocks (except for Airflow Tile, Mesh Tile and Window Tile), it's then considered exposed.
- This means the player can safely build the Enclosed Telescope in a 3-tile high room (which has its ceiling on the fourth tile), while having the Telescope functional.
When operating, the Enclosed Telescope discover tiles on the Starmap clockwise, starting from the left-above tile of where it is currently in. When the ring is completed, it will scan further tiles. At most, the Enclosed Telescope can discover tiles that are 4 tiles away from it.
A normal Duplicant needs 300s to discover a new tile.
Tips
- As the Spacefarer Module is 12-tiles wide, the Enclosed Telescope can work in any place in the module.
- As the interior of rocket module is considered a different map in the game, this means the player can use the Enclosed Telescope without digging through the asteroid's surface.
- As a Science Building, the Enclosed Telescope receives a +10% efficiency bonus when placed inside a Laboratory.
- Even though Enclosed Telescope's oxygen requirements depend on the operating duplicant, they do not actually breath while inside the telescope, and therefore do not spend exosuit's Oxygen supply (If equipped) and cannot suffocate.
- Temperature of the incoming oxygen does not affect the operating duplicant nor the telescope's temperature in any way.
- While Enclosed Telescope requires Oxygen gas to place a research errand, it will continue working until the duplicant leaves even if oxygen supply has cut off and its internal storage is empty (If other requirements are met).
- This means that it is possible to run Enclosed Telescope on very low oxygen supply, although it may be considered an exploit.
