Food storage
Food is only fully preserved when it's both, in a Deep Freeze, and in a Sterile Atmosphere.
Spoilage speed
Each Food has a base decay rate. For foodstuff with a base shelf life of 4 cycles this is -25% freshness/cycle. Each modifier causes a part of this base decay rate which are then added together.
Example:
- Unrefrigerated is x0.7, normal atmosphere is x0.3, for normal food spoilage speed of x1
- Refrigerated is x0.2, polluted atmosphere is x1, for a faster food spoilage speed of x1.2
Temperature
Cooling Food slows down its spoilage. A Refrigerator cools down its contents to 1 °C33.8 °F. The game looks at the food item and its surrounding atmosphere, and picks whichever is lower to decide whether it is refrigerated. Therefore, food can be refrigerated simply by being stored in a cold place.
If the Food is inside a Vacuum, the temperature of the food alone determines whether it's considered refrigerated or frozen.
Unrefrigerated
Above 4 °C39.2 °F: food spoilage multiplier is x0.7 (-17.5%/cycle from a base -25%/cycle)
Refrigerated
Below 4 °C39.2 °F: food spoilage multiplier is x0.2 (-5%/cycle from a base -25%/cycle)
Deep Freeze
Below -18 °C-0.4 °F: food spoilage multiplier is x0 (only the atmosphere will contribute to spoilage)
The only exception is
Sleet Wheat Grain, which is much easier to store without spoilage: its refrigerated temperature is less than or equal to 35 °C95 °F, and its deep freeze temperature is less than or equal to 10 °C50 °F.
Atmospheres
Food spoils depending on the atmosphere it is exposed to:
- Normal Atmosphere: food spoilage multiplier: x0.3 (-7.5%/cycle from a base -25%/cycle)
- Polluted Atmosphere: food spoilage multiplier: x1 (-25%/cycle from a base -25%/cycle)
- Sterile Atmosphere: food spoilage multiplier: x0 (only the temperature will contribute to spoilage)
The following atmospheres are considered as sterile and slow down Food spoilage:
Polluted Oxygen and
Gas Phosphorus are considered polluted atmospheres. Any other Gases, Liquids or Solids (like on a conveyor rail inside a Tile) are normal atmospheres. like other entities, Food entombed inside Manual airlocks, mechanized airlocks, or natural tiles will retain their state indefinitely until dug out.
Spoilage speed table
| Temperature | Atmosphere | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Sterile | Normal | Polluted | |
| Below -18 °C-0.4 °F (frozen) | x0 | x0.3 | x1 |
| -18 °C-0.4 °F to 4 °C39.2 °F (refrigerated) | x0.2 | x0.5 | x1.2 |
| Above 4 °C39.2 °F (unrefrigerated) | x0.7 | x1 | x1.7 |
| Temperature | Atmosphere | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Sterile | Normal | Polluted | |
| Below -18 °C-0.4 °F (frozen) | forever | x3.333 | x1 |
| -18 °C-0.4 °F to 4 °C39.2 °F (refrigerated) | x5 | x2 | x0.833 |
| Above 4 °C39.2 °F (unrefrigerated) | x1.428 | x1 | x0.588 |
Buff and Debuffs
Aquatic Diet
Radiation Resistant: Aquatic Diet is a buff dupes get that gives Radiation Resistance 20% when they eat sea-grown foods. It's
exclusive
Soul Food
Frost Burger has the highest food quality in the game and unique Soul Food effect, which grants -15% stress relief and -2 Athletics for 2 cycles.
Hot Stuff
Athletics +3, Strength +3, Sneeziness +1, Stress: +5%/cycle
Frost Resistant: Spicy Diet
Temporary immunity against Chilly Surroundings and Soggy Feet
Tips
After the November 2025 Quality of Life Update food inside food storages get little icons that indicate their state. There is an icon for the following states:
Refrigerated if it is between 4 °C39.2 °F and -18 °C-0.4 °F
Deep Freeze: if it is below -18 °C-0.4 °F
Fresh: if it is between 50% and 100% freshness
Stale: if it is below 50% freshness
Seasoned: if it was spiced
Germs: if it has any % of germs
History
- EX1-463874:
- Rottable items now have two stages of cooling: refrigerated and deep freeze.
- Rottable items aren't fully preserved unless they are both in sterile atmosphere AND deep-frozen, because temperature and atmosphere effects now stack.
- Temperature and atmosphere effects have been rebalanced to account for this.
- Refrigerated food now lasts 5x as long instead of 2x.
- Food preservation times were incorrectly reported in the Codex, and were missing their refrigeration value.
- Rottable foods correctly detect if they're in an active fridge or not.
- Refrigerators cool things to 2 °C35.6 °F instead of 4 °C39.2 °F, so that they actually get cold enough to be refrigerated. Note: foods in a powered fridge are always considered refrigerated regardless of temperature.
- Foods dropped from a fridge will no longer continue cooling off on the ground.
- "Unrefrigerated Food" notification now jumps to that food when clicked. Only partially stale unrefrigerated food in storage will trigger the notification.
- EX1-465635: Foods in vacuum now use exclusively their internal temperature to decide if they are refrigerated or not.
- U48-567980: Raw Egg is now edible.
- U56-674504: Added new foods and ingredients, The Prehistoric Planet Pack DLC
- U57-700386: Food items shown in a storage UI can now display icons to show whether the item is fresh / stale / deep frozen / refrigerated / spiced.
