Grubfruit Plants are a food plant that grows from a Spindly Grubfruit Seeds. It stays as Spindly Grubfuit until a Divergent tends it and turns it into Grubfuit.

Food

It produces Grubfruit, or Spindly Grubfruit, which are both edible, but can be further cooked into Grubfruit Preserve, or Roast Grubfruit Nut respectively.

Grubfruit is less calorie dense than any other food items: a single kilogram of Grubfruit is only 250 kcal (for comparison, even a 1kg of Meal Lice is 600 kcal). This is important to know since storage capacity of Ration Boxes and Refrigerators depend on mass. On top of that Grubfruits have a very short shelf life of 4 cycles.

Grubfruit

Farming Grubfruit Plants requires to have at least one Divergent critter in the farm as well. (Currently it is not common knowledge how many plants one critter can support.)

Since a healthy Grubfruit Plant drops 8 kg or 2000kcal of Grubfruit every 8 cycles, they grant an average 250kcal per cycle. This theoretically requires 4 plants per duplicant. However, 4 plants which were planted simultaneously will only grant food every 8 cycles, then feed a dupe for 2 days and then the Grubfruit would spoil, leaving the Duplicant to starve if the plants are not carefully planted.

This makes it all the more important to cook the 2000kcal Grubfruit with 4000g Sucrose into 2400kcal Grubfruit Preserve, which has a shelf life of 32 cycles (and increases the Food Quality to Good [+3]).
At 2400 kcal / 8 cycles, it gives 300 kcal per cycle on average, and only 3.33 Grubfruit Plants are needed per Duplicant.

Spindly Grubfruit

Farming Spindly Grubfruit Plants must be done without Divergent critters in the farm. However, it will yield fewer calories.

A Spindly Grubfruit can be harvested for one Spindly Grubfruit worth 800kcal every 4 cycles, which is 200kcal per cycle on average. This requires 5 plants per duplicant. However, it can, with no extra ingredient, be cooked into 1200kcal of Roast Grubfruit Nut, which is 300kcal per cycle where 3.33 Plants can feed one Duplicant. Albeit lower Food Quality (Poor [+1]), this is the same amount of calories as making Grubfruit Preserve, but does not require a divergent critter, or additional Sucrose.
