Toggling is an Errand type performed by a Duplicant when some buildings change state. Whenever a building is designated by the player to be disabled or enabled, the building will not change state until a Duplicant physically travels to the building to toggle its state. Duplicants must also perform the change state errand to change the setting on a Liquid or Gas Valve, or to lock or unlock Doors. This means the Duplicant must first travel to near the building, then spend time performing the errand before the building can change state.

However, some buildings can change state instantly, without the need for a Duplicant to perform an errand. In these cases, the change will take place immediately after input from the player choosing to change state. Notably, a Switch or Signal Switch will change state as soon as the player chooses to toggle the switch, no matter where the switch is located. This can be very convenient to enable or disable powered buildings by placing a switch into the Wire circuit, for example to be used as a light switch, to shut off a Liquid or Gas Pump quickly, or to disable entire circuits to re-route power. A Signal Switch connected to a Liquid or Gas Shutoff can be used to instantly open or close pipes, e.g. allowing the redirection of gasses in a ventilation system.

Change in building states that require the Toggle errand include:

  • Enabling or disabling any building.
  • Changing the flow control threshold of a Liquid or Gas Valve.
  • Changing a Door of any kind to Open, Auto, or Lock.
