In Oxygen Not Included you have the ability to choose an asteroid type on which to found your colony. These are all variations on the same basic asteroid template intended to mix up early and midgame strategies. They all have different assortments of biomes, critters, and randomized traits.

* This Asteroid is from a DLC and contains DLC biomes not listed here. See the Asteroid's page or Biome for more information.

World Seed

World seeds define the maps layout. They are randomly generated, but if you loved the map you just played on and want to retry that seed, or share that world for your friend to play too, you can take that alphanumerical seed, enter it to the seed menu and get the same asteroid layout.

World Traits

Depending on the asteroid type and world seed, an asteroid may have a number of random traits which affect the biomes and terrain features which can generate there.

Story Traits

Additionally, upon world creation, players can selectively enable or disable the generation of story traits, which are lore-focused points of interest that can provide unusual benefits to colonies.

Base

Standard Asteroids which tend to be somewhat similar to one another.

Terra

A temperate asteroid.

The Frosty Planet Pack is needed to unlock this content Ceres

An asteroid added by The Frosty Planet Pack DLC with new cold Biomes.

The Prehistoric Planet Pack is needed to unlock this content Relica

An asteroid added by The Prehistoric Planet Pack DLC with new Biomes.

Oceania

Similar to Terra, but with more Salt Water.pngSalt Water Steam.png Salt.png Brine.png Ice.png.

Rime

A uniformly cold asteroid with more Biomes and additional Volcanoes.

Verdante

A Forest asteroid that lacks a Tundra Biome.

Arboria

A colder variant of Verdante, with Tundra Biomes, but without Marsh Biomes.

Volcanea

A variant of Terra with a guaranteed magma vents, which makes it hotter.

The Badlands

Features large swaths of generic rocks and lacks Biomes with liquid Water.pngWater Steam.png Ice.png.

Aridio

A uniformly hot variant of Verdante.

Oasisse

The starting area is besieged by hot Sand.pngSand Molten Glass.png, and there are no cold Biomes.

The Lab

These are special asteroid types that are more unique compared to their standard counterparts. These asteroids are accessed through a different style of gameplay called The Lab and unique challenges not seen on other asteroids.

Skewed

A tilted world, at once strange and...strangely familiar. Its singular terrain is consistent across all universes.

This resistance to the fluidity of the temporal shifts has the cosmos buzzing, as individual colonies compare notes on successes, failures and the bizarre redistribution of resources.

A unique asteroid similar to Terra with the Geodes world trait, but which is rotated 90°; from the standard orientation. The Magma Biome is at the left of the map, whereas the usual Space Biome is at the right of the map; however, the top of the map is still the space access point for rocketry and meteors, since the sides and bottom of the map are bordered by Neutronium.pngNeutronium Neutronium.png as on a regular map. Unique to this map, almost all Ruins and their contents (including the Gravitas Lobby, but excluding Story Traits and Anti Entropy Thermo-Nullifiers) are also rotated sideways. There are some other unusual features on this asteroid, including (but not limited to) a pair of uncovered Gold Volcanoes within a chlorine/hydrogen gas pocket at the intersection of several biomes.

The "alert" welcome message at the beginning of the game is different for this asteroid, and initially appears rotated by 90°; itself:

This asteroid is oddly tilted, as though a powerful external force once knocked it off its axis.

I'll need to recalibrate my approach to colony-building in order to make the most of this unusual distribution of resources.

The Frosty Planet Pack is needed to unlock this content Blasted Ceres

The heavily damaged remnants of a frosty location with sub-zero temperatures throughout.

Exploring the rubble of Blasted Ceres's sub-zero temperatures is particularly challenging, yet natural fuel sources provide a valuable payoff

The Prehistoric Planet Pack is needed to unlock this content RelicAAAAAAAGHH

This asteroid is very similar to Relica with guaranteed Geoactive and Volcanic Activity world traits. The Demolior impact happens in 10 cycles and cannot be adjusted by world difficulty. When the impact does happen, all Geysers on the asteroid will be uncovered and erupt immediately.

Impactor asteroid collision in 10 cycles!

My scans indicate that the impact will trigger the eruption of all geysers that surround our landing site. There are...so many.

Initiate survival procedures immediately.
