Decorate
Decorating is the errand involving producing artworks out of various types of canvases and sculpting blocks to increase their Decor bonus, as well as operating certain types of artistic buildings and machinery. The time spent on a Decorate errand depends on the duplicant's Creativity stat, with each attribute increase adds 10% decorating speed. Duplicants which lack any decorating skills cannot do Decorating errands.
Artwork
Artworks are buildings which can be Decorated to increase their Decor bonuses. The artwork buildings themselves (blocks and canvases) are built as a Construction errand, however painting or sculpting them occurs as a Decorating errand. The quality of an artwork is dependent on a duplicant's skill. Artwork decoration is the main type of Decorate errand; these errands are prioritized as Decorating, are sped up by a duplicant's Creativity attribute, give Creativity experience, and require at least one Decorating skill (i.e. Art Fundamentals or better) to perform.
Quality
The following is a list of the different possible quality levels for artwork, including the required skills and decor bonuses for each:
Skill | Artwork type | Decor bonus |
---|---|---|
Art Fundamentals | Crude | +5 |
Aesthetic Design | Quaint | +10 |
Masterworks | Masterpiece | +15 |
Paintings
There are three types of painting canvas: Blank Canvas (2x2), Portrait Canvas (2x3), and Landscape Canvas (3x2). There is 1 type of crude and 1 type of quaint painting for each canvas, plus 15 types of masterpieces for Blank Canvases, 12 masterpieces for Portrait Canvases and 11 masterpieces for Landscape Canvases. Some of the masterpiece paintings are locked behind Blueprints. The following images show the types of paintings available:
Sculptures
There are five types of sculptures: Sculpting Block (2 high), Large Sculpting Block (3 high), Metal Block (3 high), Marble Block (2x3), and Ice Block (2x2). Ice Blocks will melt at the melting temperature of water in-game. Most sculpture block types have exactly 1 crude and 1 quaint sculpture each, plus either 6 masterpieces (for Sculpture Blocks or Large Sculpture Blocks) or 5 masterpieces (for Metal Blocks or Marble Blocks). Ice Blocks, however, have no masterpieces, but have 3 quaint sculptures instead. Some of the masterpiece sculptures (and 2 quaint Ice Blocks) are locked behind Blueprints. The following images show the types of sculptures available:
Excavate Fossil
Decorating errands also include Excavate Fossil, which is used to uncover or remove fossil structures as part of the Ancient Specimen story trait. Excavate Fossil is much the same as other Decorating errands, except that it requires the Masterworks skill.
The Ancient Specimen, Frozen Fossil, Amber Fossil, and Petrified Fossil can all be excavated; Fossil Fragments can also be excavated, although doing so is functionally akin to deconstructing them - the Fossil Fragments are converted into, and dropped as, Fossil.
Building Operation
Some types of buildings require Duplicant operation in the form of a Decorate errand (or the same thing under a different name) - they use Duplicants' Creativity attribute and are prioritized (at least in part) as a Decorating task.
The following buildings are operated with a Decorate errand; unless otherwise indicated, these errands all give Creativity experience:
- Ancient Specimen (requires Masterworks skill)
- Once the Ancient Specimen story trait is completed, the Ancient Specimen may be operated by a Duplicant to produce Fossil from Diamond.
- Clothing Refashionator (requires Aesthetic Design skill)
- Artifact Analysis Station (required Aesthetic Design skill; prioritized as either Research or Decorating; gives Research experience)
