This Guide will teach you all about Agriculture - the art of growing the plants you find in the colony, and what you need to know to maximize your yield.

Good to know

• Plants growing in one of the Basic Farming items grow faster and have shorter harvest intervals than plants growing in the wild.
• Wild growing plants do not require fertilization or irrigation.

Pincha Pepper and Dasha Saltvine must be planted in a tile rotated upside-down.

Plant requirements

All Plants have minimum criteria needed to be matched to keep them growing. If one of the minimum criteria is not met the plant becomes stifled and stops growing. If more than one minimum criteria is not met the plant will die, leaving a seed behind.

Atmosphere

Some plants will only grow in specific gases. Thimble Reed and Waterweed are the only plants that will grow in liquids.

Atmospheric pressure

Most plants require ≥150g of air pressure.

The Mealwood plant growing in an atmosphere composed of 150g of Oxygen and 10g of Chlorine.

What this means is at least one tile of the plant needs to have at least 150g of the compatible gas. It does not matter which tile this is, nor do the other gases or their mass.

Temperature

Each plant has an individual acceptable temperature range - see Plants in Comparison table.

Irrigation

Some domesticated plants must be irrigated to grow. See Plants in Comparison table for details on which plant needs which irrigation.

Fertilization

Some domesticated plants must be fertilized to grow. See Plants in Comparison table above for details on which plant needs which fertilization.

Plant pots

Flower Pot

The Flower Pot is not suitable for harvestable plants. It accepts only decorative plants (Bluff Briar, Buddy Bud, Mirth Leaf, Jumping Joya, Sporechid). Its purpose is to add Decor.

Planter Box

The Planter Box is early available after researching Basic Farming. It can grow most crops. It allows manual fertilization and irrigation.

Farm Tile

The Farm Tile is available after researching Meal Preparation. It can grow Mealwood, Bristle Blossom, Sleet Wheat, Pincha Pepper and Wheezewort. It allows fertilization and manual irrigation.

Hydroponic Farm

Like the Farm Tile the Hydroponic Farm is available after researching Agriculture and can grow Mealwood, Bristle Blossom, Sleet Wheat, Pincha Pepper and Wheezewort. It needs to be fertilized manually each cycle by a Duplicant, but it receives irrigation through the connected Liquid Pipe.

Maintaining the right temperature

Temperature in your farm is very much affected by the environment temperature. The environment can get warmer through items that produce heat, creeps through walls and resources, even your Duplicants produce and spread some heat by mere existence. Wheezewort can be spaced evenly throughout your farm area to help stave off some of the heat until further cooling methods can be put into place. Though now with the DLC this adds a slightly dangerous radiation hand off to your duplicates while farming so make sure to watch out for radiation sickness while farming. Similarly Chilliness can spread by air exchange or heat spreading towards colder regions. Controlling the environment is one of the key challenges in this game and is worth its own guide.
