Food (Building)
Food buildings focus on food production and storage. Food is one of the most important resources in Oxygen Not Included.
Every duplicant needs 1000 kilocalories per day. Food items that are not refrigerated, nor stored in sterile environment will spoil and eventually turn into Rot Piles. All food loaded into cooking stations counts as refrigerated.
Sources
In the starting Temperate Biome or Forest Biome, there is Buried Muckroot or Hexalent that could be harvested. 16,000 kcal Nutrient Bars are available in the Ration Box nearby the Printing Pod.
The main source of food is farmed in Planter Boxes and later on in Farm Tiles or Hydroponic Farms. These products may be cooked on Electric Grill or Gas Range, which will increase food's quality, but also its cost.
Another source of food is hunting down wild creatures. These creatures may defend themselves, which may lead to a loss of duplicant, if they were especially low on health.
In case of emergency Microbe Musher may be used, but it will waste great amount of water.
Tips
- In the early game, it is recommended to not produce a great surplus of food because of spoiling.
- Storing food in a refridgerator or below 4 °C39.2 °F will slow spoil rate, Keeping the food in deep freeze (below -18 °C-0.4 °F) and a sterile environment (such as immersing the food in Carbon Dioxide) will keep the food from spoiling. Contaminated Atmosphere, for example Polluted Water or Polluted Oxygen, will increase how quickly food spoils.
